Marketing & Business for ARTISTS by Alyson Stanfield

Miami Art Marketing Salon, an eclectic group of more than 20 artists, gather weekly for support at Windisch-Hunt Fine Art in Coconut Grove.
Coconut Grove, FL, April 27, 2009 “ The Art Market is not immune to recession. The Mei Moses Art Index that tracks pricing in the art market, is down 35% for the first quarter of 2009. Many Miami galleries are closing their doors.
But adversity breeds creativity and… leaders. To keep going, Miami artist Debra Cortese launched Miami Art Marketing Salon this month, a biz education and support group for local artists.
The idea was born last year when Cortese, whose trademark is Nature’s Energy art, took an online art business course by ArtBiz coach, Alyson Stanfield.
Stanfield, an author of I’d Rather Be In The Studio, the artist’s no-excuse guide to self-promotion, designed a concept of a “marketing salon†that offers a blueprint for artists to form a local support group.
The nine-meeting program plan can be downloaded from Stanfield’s website, artbizconnection.com, free of charge.
April 7, the day Cortese launched the Miami Art Markting Salon, more than 20 artists showed up at Windisch-Hunt Fine Art Gallery in Coconut Grove. Annamaria Windisch-Hunt, the gallery owner and artist herself, is happy to host this creative group.
Cortese facilitates the salon using the free nine-meeting program plan developed by Alyson Stanfield. The program covers how to set goals, define your art, assess and improve sales opportunities and other important art business topics.
Balloon Artist, Irina Patterson, spotted Cortese’s post about the Miami Art Salon on Twitter and joined. Debra is a perfect example of a leader who turns an adversity into an advantage, Patterson said. If it wouldn’t be for her own desire to succeed, these local artists would probably never meet face-to-face. And what an amazing group this is!

On April 7, 2009, South Florida artists gathered at Windisch-Hunt Fine Art Gallery in Coconut Grove for the first Miami Art Marketing Salon. This is a nine session course with materials provided free of charge by Alyson Stanfield, Art Biz Coach and author of I’d Rather Be In The Studio, the artist’s no-excuse guide to self-promotion.
South Miami artist and handbag designer, Debra Cortese had participated in one of Stanfield’s online marketing courses and was so impressed with the material that she made the commitment to facilitate this course for fellow artists that are interested in promoting their work and careers. You can read more about the Art Salon in the following blog posts:

The Miami Art Salon was filled to capacity on the first day and is no longer accepting registrations for this term, however, Cortese is already planning another Art Marketing Salon sometime in the fall of 2009, and she is putting together the outline for an Art Licensing workshop. Seems I’ve been even busier than usual. The Art Marketing Salon will have our 3rd workshop tonight at the Windisch-Hunt Fine Art Gallery in Coconut Grove. Last week, we had 20 artists participating, and this week I expect a full house because everyone is back in town.
Collective energy and ideas have been flowing and from the emails and calls I receive throughout the week, I know this project is stirring up all kinds of collaborations and new actions for every artist that is participating.

2nd workshop of Miami Art Salon members at Windisch-Hunt Fine Arts in Coconut Grove, Florida
As I stated when first announcing that I’d facilitate this 9 week, Art Marketing Course as provided by Alyson Stanfield, my personal goals are to develop a portfolio and web presence for my Nature’s Energy series art. Thus far, this includes food art: Mango and Tomato, just completed the first stage of Bromeliad art in conjunction with the Bromeliad Society of South Florida, I have the Native Plant Series to work on in the next 2 months that will debut with Arts at St. Johns for their Plants Without Borders program and, I’m also creating an astrological nature’s art series that will premiere on my line of Cortese Design handbags. No wonder I’m feeling busier than usual 😉

AND…here’s a short excerpt (read more at MAY 2009 link) from Eric Francis’ Planet Waves Monthly Horoscope for May 2009:
“Allow the world to take on a transparent quality; see through the unnecessary, torturous maze of ego and remember that each of us is capable of expressing who we came here to be. Certainly you are feeling this potential, and it’s more than spring in the air. We each get there differently. In the immortal words of the Grateful Dead, “Some rise, some fall and some climb to get to Terrapin.â€
