Kids back to school next week!

Our holiday/winter break was quite different this year. My youngest daughter is a college student now as are most of her friends. I had agreed that Jen and Sabrina could temporarily transform our considerably less-than-suitable-for-living, laundry room space into a dorm room for a couple of weeks for two more girlfriends. I also agreed to a New Year’s Eve party at the house and of course it was a bit different and much larger than they originally described, but we all shared that it was one of our best New Year’s Eve celebrations in a long time.
The visiting students will leave tomorrow morning and everyone will be back in classes at New College, UM, FIU and Miami-Dade College starting next week.

It will be much more quiet around here but I can get back to my usual work routine and my coveted, precious, totally uninterrupted hours of creative/studio time.

Cortese Design Bags at New York Fashion Week event

“White Orchids Swaying Ferns” (shown above), “Blue Tango” and “Fuschia” Tote Bags by Cortese Designs are partying in New York at the Inc Lounge in the Time Hotel on West 49th Street. They’re part of the “Untapped Fashion & Music – NYC 09” event which happens tonight between 8 to 11 pm.
After that, they are off to a NY after-party at Greenhouse. (Lucky bags!)
I’m physically here in Miami, but my inner designer is definitely right there in New York via the three tote bags that bear my name. For this event, editors from local & national press (hopefully all of the following): OceanDriveTime Out New YorkMiami HeraldPeople MagazineUS WeeklyW Magazine, VOGUEGlamourLucky MagazineNew York PostVillage VoiceWWD) get to view collections from many designers, while listening to music from unsigned & talented musicians. The fashion designers’ creations will be showcased on models strutting around the lounge. The event is sponsored by Eric and Luck, Sagatiba, and Starlite Shoes & Accessories. Celebrity guests will be in attendance including Isaac Mizrahi, Real Housewives of New York and New Jersey, MTV’s Real World contestants, America’s Next Top Model contestants, Malan Breton of Project Runway, Kristen Dalton – Miss USA.
Designers showcased will include: Aqua Vi, Gia Fragalli, Chak Chel, Debra Cortese, Peony by Sheerly Novian, and many others.
Once again, Jordana Engholm of Jordana PR has gone above and beyond the usual to create this innovative, intimate club event to promote the work of emerging fashion designers and musicians.

Art Licensing information

I’ve been learning with artist, Tara Reed and she has partnered with Paul Brent. Today, I’m working on updating and improving my art for licensing web pages and listening to Tara’s interview with Paul Brent.

It’s a free online audio file and every time I listen, I get another piece of information that is moving me forward. I’ll be contacting a very special referral next week and my web pages must be in tip top shape for this! SAMPLE FLOWERS AND TREES ART PAGE HERE

Zingy Mango Salsa Recipe

A colorful dish of delightful flavors – ideal with summer cocktails
on the patio, beach or boat!

4 large ripe mangos* sliced and chopped to 1/4 inch chunks (plus mushy parts)
4 ripe plum tomatoes, chopped to 1/4 inch chunks
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1-2 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh ginger root
1-2 small, but fiery red jalapeno peppers – finely chopped
Juice of 1 lime
1/4 cup freshly chopped cilantro
1/4 cup finely chopped cucumber (sking and seeds removed)

optional: 2 or 3 large ripe peaches – also finely chopped
whole cilantro leaves without stems for garnish

Chia Head Shrek & Mango 16 x 12 open edition printChia Head Shrek & Mango

TOOLS
a good peeling and chopping knife
a large glass bowl for mixing – you may want to serve in this as well
bowl or container for peelings (makes great compost for your garden)

*4 good sized, ready-to-be-eaten Mangos (from your favorite tree or market). Here in Miami, the Florida ‘Haden’ is usually readily available and I believe these are one of the most popular varieties sold in supermarkets. If you can fine “Nam Doc Mai” Thailand mangos, these would make an exceptionally sweet and aromatic salsa. Good to use all of the same kind, but mixing 2 different kinds of mangos can create a unique flavor to this dish.

Prepare at least 2 hours ahead of serving time. Serve at room temperature with scoop shaped corn chips. Salsa is also an excellent marinade/condiment to fish or chicken dishes.

Recipe makes about 3 cups (4 if you add the peaches)
Yum… just typing this out has my mouth watering. ENJOY!
